Easy to use  Calendar slightly sluggish at times
 Plethora of functions and features
Excellent for seeing projects as a whole and also the details of each item within
 Simple navigation

Basecamp is a very popular and very functional project management system. In fact, it is one of the most-preferred project management systems available. Basecamp’s features are highly valuable and useful and it can handle a number of projects of varying complexity.

User Interface

The user interface is extremely friendly and easy to look at. Project management itself can be complex and overwhelming, however, the array of tools, functions, and features help organize and manage projects effectively.

Basecamp provides an interface that is both simple and incredibly responsive. Adding, editing, and deleting new notes, to-do lists, projects, and users is so simple that project managers will be able to do this with ease.

In addition to its robust appearance, quick response time, and user-friendly interface, a number of project managers and Basecamp users are able to:

  • Create projects
  • Assign users
  • Create and manage calendars
  • Create and manage to-do lists
  • Review previous project history

These functions and features allow project managers and users to use the system with ease and with minimal wait or down time.

Basecamp has one of the easiest to use calendars available. The Basecamp calendar provides substantial functionality, allowing the user to add to-dos; move, edit or delete events, and even provide support for multiple calendars. It’s also easy to check and complete to-dos straight from the calendar.

File System

It used to be that users had the ability to switch between various aspects of a project like a physical file folder. This is not only aesthetically pleasing, but provides substantial navigational power for all users.

While this is still a prominent feature of Basecamp, one of its newest features is the ability to download multiple files at once. This can be incredibly useful to teams, especially when there are multiple files that correspond to a particular project. Files are also easily downloaded with a quick response time and without file corruption.

Invite Other Users and Expand Teams

Basecamp makes it extremely easy to invite and remove people from projects. It offers an interface with the means to add people using either their name or their e-mail address.

To add a person by name, they must already be in the system and/or must be assigned to a different project already. It even goes a step further and offers the ability to auto-complete names so that the person inviting others does not have to type the full name.

A good project manager monitors project progress and keeps track of each team member’s roles and assigned tasks for each project. Basecamp allows project managers to see a particular user’s projects and assigned tasks. This gives a project manager the ability to monitor productivity, work capacity, and his or her current progress within each task.

By accessing the “Everyone” page in Basecamp, each user has his or her own icon and can be accessed from this page. It details exactly what each user’s role, tasks, and productivity on a particular project. It also provides the ability to display all current and past “To-Do” listings.

Basecamp’s “Everything” page allows for users to view all files, discussions, tasks, history, and even forwarded emails. Each item is dated and time stamped and can be organized by date, time, priority, and status.

This is a great feature that allows users to catch up on a project’s history, look for a specific file or discussion, or monitor the project’s progress by looking at all the open to-dos and tasks.

For a comprehensive web based system, Basecamp is surprisingly responsive and fast. Almost all aspects of the site load almost instantly, including the search function. While it may take the calendar several seconds to respond, this does not really detract from the user’s overall experience and system functionality.

Ultimately, Basecamp is a complete solution and is extremely easy to use and has robust functionality. It is also extremely intuitive and offers users a stress-free environment, and is easy for users to manage and navigate.

Basecamp certainly gets the job done professionally, without cluttering the user interface with unnecessary features. Basecamp has the ability to manage multiple projects of different sizes and complexities. While there are no serious flaws to this software, a team or a project manager still must determine if Basecamp is an appropriate system for project needs.
